Applications to be a beneficiary of the 2011 Grocery Charity Ball are now open to any bona fide New Zealand-registered Charitable Trust.

Expectations of the Grocery Charity Ball Beneficiary

Beneficiary Benefits

The selected Beneficiary Charity will become the recipient of the proceeds from the Grocery Charity Ball held in 2011. In past years this has ranged from $100,000 donated to Cystic Fibrosis in 2004, to $500,000 donated to Life Education in 2008.

However, it should be noted -

  • The Grocery Charity Ball Trust gives no guarantee of funds raised at the 2011 Grocery Charity ball and the funds subsequently donated to the Beneficiary Charity.
  • The disbursement of the funds raised at the 2011 Grocery Charity Ball is at the discretion of the Grocery Charity Ball Trustees, and amongst other considerations, takes into account the funds raised on the night, the funds pledges and subsequently collected, the expenses incurred on the night, and the needs to maintain the reserves of the Grocery Charity Ball Trust.
  • Funds will be remitted to the Beneficiary Charity as the cash flow of the Grocery Charity Ball Trust permits.

The Grocery Charity Ball Trust will actively promote the selected Beneficiary Charity throughout 2011, via publicity on all Grocery Charity Ball marketing, sales and public relations material.

Shortlisted Applicants

The Grocery Charity Ball Trustees typically shortlist 5 to 7 Beneficiary Charities to make a formal presentation to the Trust during the week commencing Monday 29 November 2010.

The shortlisted Beneficiary Charities will be decided the week commencing Monday 8 November 2010, and successful shortlisted Applicants will be notified that week with a time. date and place to make a presentation the following week. Those Beneficiary Charities that are unsuccessful will also be notified that week.

The formal presentation by the successful shortlisted Applicants will be -

  • The week commencing Monday 29 November at a time and date designated by the Grocery Charity Ball Trustees.
  • At a venue in Auckland.
  • Have a maximum duration of 30 minutes.

The actual nature of the presentation will be left to the discretion of the Beneficiary Charity.

The Successful Applicant

Will be notified within 48 hours of their formal presentation. The unsuccessful shortlisted Applicants will be notified by the following week.

Whilst the Grocery Charity Ball will promote and fund the selected Beneficiary Charity, it is also anticipated that the selected charity will in return ....

  • Promote the Grocery Charity Ball throughout 2011.
  • Actively assist in maximising the success of the 2011 Ball.
  • Enhance market reception of the Grocery Charity Ball event and brand in the future.

More specifically, that includes -

  • The Grocery Charity Ball Trust will be promoted by the selected Beneficiary Charity as a major sponsor for the duration of 2011 ... with recognition and publicity accordingly on the charity’s marketing collateral (including website, newsletter, etc).
  • The Grocery Charity Ball Trust will have access to the selected Beneficiary Charity's sponsors, donors and supporters for the purposes of helping secure table sales, auction items, and donations for the Ball.
  • The selected Beneficiary Charity will actively assist with the marketing and selling of the event by attending monthly planning meetings, assisting with the marketing and selling of tables.
  • The Beneficiary Charity will be asked to assist with manpower and other resources before and at the Ball.
  • The Beneficiary Charity will be required to take a major role in securing items for the Silent Auction.
  • The Beneficiary Charity will be asked to help secure items for the Live Auction.

Application Caveat

The Beneficiary Charity will be expected to do nothing to damage its own brand, or damage the brands of both the Grocery Charity Ball Trust and event. If in the Trustees’ view this happens, it will remain at their discretion to withdraw support for the selected charity and seek a new Beneficiary.

Melanoma benefits from 2010 Ball


The Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand is a registered charitable trust, a young charity formed in 2004, which is working hard to reduce the incidence and dreadful impact of melanoma in New Zealand.

New Zealand has the highest melanoma incidence rate in the world. Recent figures put our incidence even ahead of Australia's. Every year around 300 New Zealanders die from melanoma and there are 2000 new diagnoses. The death rates amongst New Zealand men are even increasing! These are shocking statistics for a cancer that is largely preventable.

Although most early melanoma is successfully treated through surgery, once melanoma is invasive it is a horrible cancer. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not proven to assist in treatment of Stage 4 melanoma. Melanoma is taking the lives of many young adults as well as older New Zealanders.

The Melanoma Foundation works in three goal areas:

  • Improving the outcome for people affected by melanoma. This includes providing information and support for patients and their families. They also advocate that New Zealanders should be offered service and treatment equal to the best in the world. In the future they hope to be able to support melanoma research and better facilities.
  • Community awareness and education about melanoma in the interest of prevention and early detection of melanoma.
  • Fostering communication and co-ordination amongst professionals whose work relates to melanoma.
